His Name Was Jason

I’ve been writing about the people who have left their mark on my life, whether for a season, a reason or a lifetime. Today, I want to talk about Jason.

I met Jason when I was in junior high school. We were set up on a blind date for the Jordan High School Junior Prom. It was a last-minute arrangement because my original date had canceled on me. At the time, I was devastated. I already had the dress and had been looking forward to the dance for weeks. Suddenly, it seemed I wouldn’t be going at all.

That’s when my cousin Michelle stepped in.

“Hey, I know a guy,” she said.

So on prom night, I met Jason for the very first time.

I was standing at the top of the stairs when my sister opened the front door and let him in. I remember being instantly smitten. He looked incredibly handsome in his tuxedo, and I was a bundle of nerves.

We were on a double date with my best friend Melissa and her date, Dan. We went to Olive Garden for dinner and spent the evening at the dance. Back then, I was painfully shy and far too self-conscious to get out on the dance floor. I think Jason and I shared a couple of slow dances, and if memory serves me correctly, Melissa and I even switched dance partners for one song.

Eventually, all four of us grew bored with the dance and decided to leave early. Being the mature young adults we were definitely not, we headed to Murray Park instead of going home. We spent time on the swings and climbed around the old metal airplane that used to sit proudly in the center of the park.

On the drive home, we were involved in a minor fender bender. No one was hurt. It was just a slow, gentle tap when Jason accidentally rear-ended another car. I remember him telling me later that he had been so distracted by me that he wasn’t paying attention to the road. Whether that was true or simply a smooth teenage compliment, I’ll never know.

After dropping Melissa and Dan off at their homes, Jason drove me home. When we arrived, I invited him inside.

My mom was away for the weekend, and although I think my sister was home, I honestly can’t remember for certain.

What I do remember is that Jason and I spent hours talking and getting to know one another. For a shy teenage girl who had never experienced that kind of connection before, it felt magical. I went to bed that night absolutely floating.

For the next week, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. My mind constantly drifted back to that evening. I replayed every conversation, every smile, and every moment over and over again.

It became a short but unforgettable whirlwind romance.

The truth is, I was young. Like many teenagers, I was curious about life and eager to experience everything it had to offer. My head was easily turned by attention, and while I never cheated on Jason, I eventually ended our relationship because my feelings had become confused.

Almost immediately, I regretted it.

When I finally got my priorities slightly more in order, I reached back out to him. By that time, he had moved from Utah to Maryland to live with his mother.

We became pen pals.

For months, we exchanged letters, phone calls, and even a cassette tape Jason sent me as a . We talked about giving our relationship another chance. There were plans for him to come visit Utah around Christmas.

Keep in mind, this was the early 1990s. There was no social media, no texting, and certainly no FaceTime. Relationships survived through handwritten letters, expensive long-distance phone calls, and patience.

Somewhere along the way, though, things ended again.

I honestly can’t remember exactly what happened. I don’t even remember whether he ever made that Christmas trip to Utah. What I do remember is moving on with my life.

I eventually became involved with my daughter’s father, a complicated story I’ll save for another day.

After that relationship ended, my thoughts drifted back to Jason.

As I looked back, I realized he had always treated me with kindness, patience, and respect. I also realized there had been times when I hadn’t treated him as well as he deserved.

So once again, I reached out.

This time, I sent a letter and included my email address. Technology had finally entered our lives by then, and communication was a little easier.

Unfortunately, by that point, I had missed my opportunity.

I believe Jason was married by then and had two daughters of his own.

Life had moved forward.

There are a couple of memories from that period that still linger in my mind.

I vaguely remember a day when Michelle, Jason, and I met at a park near my house shortly after I separated from my daughter’s father. I also remember a time when Michelle and Jason unexpectedly showed up at my workplace while I was pregnant.

The father of my daughter worked there too, and he became extremely jealous when he saw Jason. In fact, my boss ended up taking him into a back room to calm him down.

Before I could even speak with them, Jason and Michelle left.

To this day, that moment haunts me.

Why were they there?

What did Jason want to say?

Was it simply a friendly visit?

Or was there something more?

I’ll never know.

Today, I am happily married and grateful for the life I have. I don’t regret having my daughter for a single second. She grew into an amazing woman and blessed me with two beautiful grandchildren who are the absolute light of my life.

Still, there will always be a small part of me that wonders.

What if I had made different choices?

What if I had given that young relationship a real chance?

What path would my life have taken?

Not because I wish my current life were different, but because sometimes certain people leave footprints on our hearts that time never quite erases.

Maybe that’s just part of being human.

Do you ever find yourself looking back on a crossroads in your life and wondering what might have happened if you had chosen a different path?
